Web Site Story: Which web services do you use?

This is such a fun College Humor parody on West Side Story that features many of the web services that are becoming integral parts of many of our lives.

Below are my reviews of each of the web services mentioned in the video, along with some fun stories about my use of them.  Use the commenting section below to share your own reviews and stories about these web services.

Hulu

I cancelled my cable TV subscription soon after finding Hulu.  I can only keep up with a few TV shows at a time and I can always find ones I like on Hulu.  I love being able to watch shows on my schedule, not the TV network’s.  I subscribe to shows like the Office and when a new episode is available it is automatically added to my queue.   With Hulu, NetFlix Watch Instantly, and other great web video services on the horizon, I don’t plan on needing a cable/satellite TV subscription ever again. Run errands on your bike and track eco stats with your iPhone

I’ve always liked the idea of walking or riding a bike to run quick errands.  Not only is this great for the environment, but it is an excellent way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  I used to have a grocery store within about a hundred yards of my apartment front door and even more stores just beyond that, so that made it easy to just walk.  However, where I live now is a bit further away from the places I run my typical errands.  I solved the matter earlier today by deciding to use my bike to run an errand.  I made the trip even more fun by using my iPhone to track tons of stats about my bike ride. Going Green Can Be Fun! Check out Living with Ed on Planet Green

For years I’ve wanted to do more to live sustainably, but up until about two years ago I hadn’t really done much towards that intention.  I was still just making baby steps towards my green goals about a year and a half ago when I met my girlfriend, now fiancé.  A few months into our relationship, I found Living with Ed on Planet Green and started watching it regularly.  Over time my fiancé transitioned from half-listening from her desk to being right next to me on the couch, full attention on the show.

Living with Ed truly made learning about going green so much fun for us!  It provided a jumpstart for both of us to Continue Reading →

Fortune names Steve Jobs CEO of the decade

As an iPhone and iTunes user and one who loves Pixar movies, I thought this was a cool announcement from earlier today.  Animated Films, the Music Industry, and Mobile Phones will never be the same, because of the profound impact Steve Jobs has had on each.

Remaking any one business is a career-defining achievement; four is unheard-of. Think about that for a moment. Henry Ford altered the course of the nascent auto industry. PanAm’s Juan Trippe invented the global airline. Conrad Hilton internationalized American hospitality.

Here is the MSNBC announcement I watched:

What will the next 5, 10, 50 years bring? Fascinating stats about our changing world

The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004.

We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist…using technologies that haven’t been invented yet…in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.

–Excerpt from Did You Know? v3.0

This has been one of my favorite online videos since I first saw it over a year ago.  It is a fast-paced video with thought-provoking statistics that demonstrate how quickly our world is shifting and changing.  For example, what are the implications of 1 out of 8 couples married in the US in 2007 meeting online?  What other areas of our life is technology infiltrating and impacting?
